Hopefully you took pictures or a video of how you left the apartment. That is always a good place to start from when defending against such charges. If not, perhaps you have witnesses as to how you left the apartment. Did you fill out a move-in/move-out checklist? Do you have receipts for a cleaning service? These are all good places to start from.

I vacated my apartment in Mt. Vernon, Ohio on April 30, 2009 after a 30 day notice. My scheduled walk-thru was 12-noon to 3 pm that day. At 9 am 4/30 I requested until 12-midnight to exit apt. due to an injury and reschedule walk-thru for May 1. The mgr. refused the extended time. The Mgr. did not come to my apt. during the 12-3 scheduled time. At 3:30 pm I again asked for an extension until midnight. Mgr. refused and took my keys. She is now demanding $1400 in clean-up and damages. She will have to take me to small claims court. I am on SS disability and have no assets. Her $$ claim is exhorbitant and unreasonable. Her past practice (and owner's) is to allow a small # of extra hours for removal and cleaning. How can I defend?
